West Saxon (Anglo-Saxon dialect)
The West-Saxon dialect was spoken in the southern regions of England in Old English times. This pretty much became the standard language for a couple of reasons: 1.) The English were being invaded by the Danes. King Alfred of Wessex who spoke West-Saxon united England under the cause of war. This help standardize the dialect. 2.) King Alfred promoted learning. He translated some major works of the time such as Beowulf and Ceadmon's works.
