In the United States, the United Service Organizations (USO) was established to provide support to U.S. military personnel around the world. The USO is made up entirely of volunteers. Its goal is to make life easier for US soldiers.

Its most publicized focus is "USO tours" that include top-billed celebrities; Bob Hope was prominent throughout his career for his USO appearances.
