At the 1908 Summer Olympics, a tug of war tournament was contested.

Teams from the United States, Sweden, Greece and Germany also entered the competition. The Greek and German teams were scratched from the competition. The American team objected to the shoes that that Liverpool team wore. The objection was overuled and the American team retired from the competition in protest.
