The Blob is a American science-fiction movie from 1958 that has risen to cult status partly because it starred Steve McQueen before he became famous, and partly because it almost perfectly exemplifies the era of sci-fi B movies.

In the original version, the Blob is a creature from another planet. A group of teenagers discover the Blob but the town people don’t believe them until it is too late.

This movie spawned a sequel in 1972 called Beware! The Blob, In which a part of the original Blob is revived and the same terror follows. Beware! The Blob is notable for being the only feature film directed by actor Larry Hagman.

A 1988 remake rewrote the plot to make the Blob a secret government project gone wrong.

The Blob was directed by Irvin Shortess Yeaworth Jr., who filmed much of the movie in his back yard in Pennsylvania. He was never particularly proud of the film. Yeaworth directed more than 400 films for motivational, educational, and entertainment purposes. He was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and also attended the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.

Yeaworth died as a result of an automobile accident near Petra in Jordan on July 19, 2004. He had been helping to establish a theme park in Jordan. He was a resident of Malvern, Pennsylvania.
