Tassos Papadopoulos

Tassos Nikolaou Papadopoulos (born January 7, 1934) has been the president of Cyprus since 2003.

Tassos Papadopoulos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He studied law in London (Gray’s Inn, Barrister-at-Law).

He is a lawyer and has been a politician for several decades. Married with two daughters and two sons. He campaigned on a platform that he would be able to secure better deal over the North Cyprus issue than the incumbent Glafcos Clerides. He was backed by not just his own party, Diko, but also the socialist Akel and social democrat Kisos.

Before the national referendum on the Annan plan to reunite the island of Cyprus, he urged his countrymen to vote No -- his recommendation is considered one of the reasons for the referendum's negative result on the Greek-Cypriot side.
