The Samaria Gorge is a natural park in the island of Crete, one of the major touristic attractions of the island.

The northern entrance to the gorge is 1250m above sea level. The gorge is a national park.

One of the "musts" for a tourist is to complete the 16km (10 mile) subtly downhill walk of the gorge from Omalos to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. A word of caution : be sure to take plenty of bottled water and suitable headgear. Many people have suffered from sunstroke. At the end of the walk you are awarded a certificate for your achievement. At Agia Roumeli one can sail to the nearby village of Chora Sfakion and catch an un-air-conditioned coach back to Chania.
