The standard groupings of taxonomy from most general to most specific are:

• Domain
• Kingdom
• Phylum (animals); Division (plants)
  • Subphylum; Subdivision
  • Superclass
• Class
• Order
  • Suborder
  • Superfamily
• Family
  • Subfamily
• Genus
  • Subgenus
  • Section
    • Subsection
• Species
  • Subspecies
  • Variety (plants only)

A typical example is Rodentia (rodents). This order belongs to the class Mammalia (mammals), and itself contains superfamilies and families like Muridae (mice) and Sciuridae (squirrels).

An acronym mnemonic for remembering this is: King Phillip called out for good soup.
