Olimpia Milano
OLIMPIA MILANO
History
The Olimpia was formed in the 1936, by Adolfo Bogoncelli a rich self-made man of Milano, with colors Red & White. The Olimpia is know also with the nick-name of Scarpette Rosse (Red Shoes), 'cause the owner Bogoncelli was the first to import from Usa the Converse All-Stars for the Olimpia players; and the schoes were Red...as the team t-shirt From the beginnings the Olimpia was the first European Team of Basketball to have a sponsor on the t-shirts: the first one was the Borletti. From 1936 to 1955 Olimpia "Borletti" Milano won 9 Italian National Chanpionship, with great players as Castelli, Paganella, Canetta, Ricky Pagani and Sandro Gamba. In the 1956 the sponsor changed and the new one is the Simmenthal; in the 1957 there was the first foreigner player in the Olimpia: the Greek Stephanidis. From 1956 to 1972 the Olimpia "Simmenthal" Milano won other 10 Italian National Chanpionship; and in the April 1 1966 won also the first European Champions Cup. Great players of that other 10 championship were Nane Vianello, Sandro Riminucci, Pieri, Bill Bradley (then great NBA player and today Senator of the USA). In the 60's and the 70's there was a great battle in Europe between 3 teams: Olimpia Milano, Ignis Varese (another North Italian Teams, 40 km from Milano) and the Real Madrid; Olimpia Won a SemiFinal of European Cup against Madrid with 46 point of Nane Vianello, lost a Final with Madrid and won an half dozen of National Championship against the Ignis Varese. In the mid 70's the Ignis Varese dominated the Italian Championship and also the European Cup. the Varese club won 9 National Championship and played 10 finals of European Cup, (5 won). In that years OLimpia Milano and Ignis Varese played several Finals for the National Championship, 2 won by Milano and 2 by Varese. In that years Milano won 2 Cup Winner's Cup. In the 1973 the team became Olimpia "Innocenti" Milano, in the 1976 Olimpia "Cinzano" Milano. The end of 70's were the dark years of the team. Milano was relegated in the 2° League, but in the same years won another one Cup Winner's Cup. In the summer 1976 the old owner Adolfo Bogoncelli take a new coach for the team: is the Usa coach Dan Peterson. In the 1977 the sponsor became Billy...and the Olimpia became Great another time! in the 1980 Adolfo Bogoncelli sold his "loved daughter" Olimpia to the Family Gabetti. The first great crak bought by the Gabetti was...Dino Meneghin, the greatest Italian Player of every time, that leaded Ignis Varese for more than 12 years! in the same years from the Olimpia "Billy" Milano bought some great players: Mike D'Antoni, John Gianelli, Roberto Premier, the twin brothers Boselli, Renzo Bariviera, Ferracini and Gallinari. From the 1980 to 1989 the Olimpia changed more sponsor (Billy, Simac, Tracer, Philips) and won all is possibile for a Team: they played 9 Finals for the championship in 10 years and won 5. Olimpia won also the 2nd and the 3rd European Champions Cup, the 1st Intercontinental Cup, 1 Korac Cup, and some Italian Cups! In the 1987 the Olimpia "Tracer" Milano did the Great Slam won:
