The Minister of the Interior in France is one of the most important governmental positions, responsible for

  • the French National Police (and now also the French Gendarmerie for many purposes)
  • the general interior security of the country, with respect to criminal acts or natural catastrophes
  • relations between the central government and local governments.

All départemental préfets are subordinate to the minister of the interior.
