Long Republic
The Long Republic (formal name: Republic of Texas) lasted from June 23, 1819 to October 8, 1820. It was never recognized. The first city under its control was Nacogdoches, and the last to fall was La Bahia. James Long, a doctor, merchant, and accused criminal, was its sole President. Others who contributed to its founding included José Gutiérrez and Jean Lafitte.
The Long Republic was formed by American settlers angered by the Adams-Onís Treaty, which renounced American claims to Texas. President Long died in Mexican custody in 1821.
