The London Borough of Hackney is a London borough in the northeast of inner London, formed in 1965 out of the former metropolitan boroughs of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington. It is one of the poorest boroughs but home to numerous clubs and a centre of the London arts scene.
Unlike most English districts, its council is led by a directly-elected mayor, currently Jules Pipe.
Hackney is one of five host boroughs for London's bid for the 2012 Olympics.
The borough includes the following areas:
- Clapton Park
- Dalston
- Hackney
- Hackney Marshes
- Hackney Wick
- Haggerston
- Homerton
- Hoxton
- Lea Bridge
- Lower Clapton
- Shacklewell
- Stamford Hill
- Stoke Newington
- Upper Clapton
- Victoria Park
Demographics of Hackney
The 2001 census gives Hackney a population of 202,824. It is 60% white, 12% black African, 10% Black Caribbean and 4% Indian. 32% of householders are owner-occupiers.
Transport links
Hackney is the only inner London borough north of the Thames that currently has no London Underground stations (with the exception of Manor House, in the extreme north-west of the borough, and on the boundary with Haringey). However a current project to extend the East London Line will seek to rectify this.
The Silverlink North London Line and the 'West Anglia' section of 'one' passes through the borough with the following stations within its boundary:
- Clapton railway station
- Dalston Kingsland railway station
- Hackney Central railway station
- Hackney Downs railway station
- Hackney Wick railway station
- Homerton railway station
- London Fields railway station
- Rectory Road railway station
- Stamford Hill railway station
- Stoke Newington railway station
