Demographics
According to the 2001 census the borough has a population of 163,944. It is 82.5% white, 4% Black African, 2% Indian, 2% Black Caribbean. 60% of households are owner-occupiers.
History
The borough was formed in 1965 from the greater part of the Essex boroughs of Barking and Dagenham.
