John Duncan

For the Canadian politician, see John Duncan (Canadian politician).

John James Duncan, Jr. (born July 21, 1947) is a Tennessee Republican politician.

Duncan was born in Lebanon, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree and subsequently received a law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1973 and was admitted to the bar that same year. He was an attorney in private practice until he became a state court judge in 1981.

He was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1988 in a special election to replace his late father, who had died in office. He was also elected to the succeeding full term and after that he has been elected to six additional full terms from the Second Congressional District and is a candidate for reelection in 2004.

Duncan is very conservative even by Republican standards; he was one of very few Republicans to oppose and vote against the U.S. invasion of Iraq, doing so on grounds of opposition to unnecessary foreign involvement.
