This flag was adopted by the Kirghiz SSR on December 22, 1952.

Prior to this, the flag was red with gold Cyrillic characters in the top-left corner, КЫРГЫЗ ССР (Kirghiz SSR) and КИРГИЗСКАЯ ССР (Kirgizskaja SSR) in a serif font.
