The flag of Hungary is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and green. Following historical traditions this flag was adopted during the 1848 revolution. Until 1945, the coat of arms with the royal crown was placed at the centre. The red colour symbolizes 'strength', the white symbolized 'faithfulness' and the green symbolizes 'hope'. During the era of Stalinism (1948-1956) the coat of arms with the red star was in the centre of the flag. In the 1956 revolution it was cut off, thus a tricolour with a hole in the middle has become the symbol of the uprising.
