Elaine Paige
Elaine Paige (born March 5, 1948 as Elaine Bickerstaff), is a world-renowned British singer in musicals.
She was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire. She is most famous for playing many of the female leads in musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber and/or Tim Rice (with whom she had a long-term relationship), such as Eva Perón in Evita, Grizabella in Cats (a role she reprised when it was filmed for a video release), Florence in Chess, and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Also, when Lloyd Webber first thought of writing a musical version of The Phantom of the Opera, he had Paige's voice in mind; however, the project changed because of Sarah Brightman. Similarly, Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance was originally written for Paige, but then produced with Marti Webb, who was one of Paige's successors in Evita. Later on, Sarah Brightman offered her version again.
Paige has also had moderate success in the UK singles charts, notable with the number one single "I Know Him So Well," (a duet with Barbara Dickson from the musical Chess) along with a top ten hit "Memory" from the musical Cats.
