Cap and Skull
Cap and Skull is a secret society at Rutgers University, based on the model of Skull and Bones at Yale. It was founded on January 18, 1900 and is still extant today. However, there was a period of inactivity from 1970 to 1981, when no new "Skulls" (as they call their members) were selected for membership.
Only 18 members (or less than 0.5% of a graduating class) are inducted every year. Admission is dependent upon excellence in academics, athletics, the arts and public service. Leadership and character are also used as factors.
Famous members include:
- Clifford Case, US senator
- Stanley N. Cohen, one of the pioneers in gene splicing
- David A. Morse, a Director-General of ILO who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969 on behalf of the ILO
- Ozzie Nelson, notable entertainer
- Paul Robeson, actor, athlete and singer
