Alex Callinicos
Alex Callinicos is a Marxist intellectual and a member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers Party. He is a professor of politics at York University and a member of the editorial board of International Socialism and British correspondent of Actuel Marx. A prolific writer for both the revolutionary and academic presses he is a descendent of Lord Acton the famous historian. His father was active in the Greek Resistance to Nazi occupation during the Second World War.
He began his involvement with revolutionary politics as a student and his first writing for the International Socialists, forerunners of the SWP, was an anlysis of the student movement of the period. Born in what is now Zimbabwe he rapidly became known in socialist and academic circles for his writings on Southern Africa and his interest in the views of French philosopher Louis Althusser.
He is a talented writer and speaker and was soon elected to the Central Committee of the SWP, a position he has retained to this day. In recent years he has been responsible for the SWP's international work, during which time there have been a number of splits in the International Socialist Tendency's affiliated groups.
He participated in the Counter-Summit to the IMF/World Bank Meeting in Prague, September 2000 and the demonstration against the G8 in Genoa, June 2001.
He is a contributor to J. Bidet and E. Kouvelakis, eds., Dictionnaire Marx Contemporain (Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 2001), and has written a number of articles in New Left Review. Other works include;
